Les roses recordades

Salvador Espriu, El caminant i el mur (1954)

El meu poble i jo

Bevíem a glops
aspres vins de burla
el meu poble i jo.

Escoltàvem forts
arguments del sabre
el meu poble i jo.

Una tal lliçó
hem hagut d'entendre
el meu poble i jo.

La mateixa sort
ens uní per sempre:
el meu poble i jo.

Senyor, servidor?
Som indestriables
el meu poble i jo.

Tenim la raó
contra bords i lladres
el meu poble i jo.

Salvàvem els mots
de la nostra llengua
el meu poble i jo.

A baixar graons
de dol apreníem
el meu poble i jo.

Davallats al pou,
esguardem enlaire
el meu poble i jo.

Ens alcem tots dos
en encesa espera,
el meu poble i jo.

Salvador Espriu, Cançons d'Ariadna (1968)

Salvador Espriu

We swallowed down
bitter wines of mockery,
my people and I.

We listened to strong
arguments of sabres,
my people and I.

That is the lesson
we've had to understand,
my people and I.

One and the same luck
made us one forever,
my people and I.

Master, servant?
Can't tell us apart.
My people and I.

We are in the right
against bastards and thieves,
my people and I.

We saved the words
of our own language,
my people and I.

We learned to go down
the stairs of mourning,
my people and I.

Once down in the well,
we're looking upwards,
my people and I.

Both of us rise up,
in our ardent waiting,
my people and I.

Bona Diada a tothom!

11 de setembre 2016

És molt difícil

És molt difícil
de trobar qui comprengui
la nostra llengua.
Però tots, en mirar-te,
provaran d'escoltar-nos.

Salvador Espriu, Formes i paraules (1974)

Queda dit, doncs. Feliç diada a tothom!

Direm la veritat, sense repòs

XXV

XXV

We'll speak the truth, without a moment's rest,
for the honour of serving, under everyone's feet.
We hate big bellies, big words,
the indecent ostentation of gold,
the badly dealt cards of luck,
the thick incense smoke of the powerful.
Now, this country of lords is vile,
they stoop down in their hatred, like dogs,
from a distance, they bark; at close range, they admit the cane;
beyond the mud they follow paths of death.
With our song, in the darkness, we build
high walls of dreams, sheltered from this blizzard.
In the night, rumour of fountains come to us:
we are shutting the doors on our fear.

daurades, sense vent! Tot m'era
camí d'ample demà, i només veia
rostres dels ja damnats, però em sentia
segur senyor del temps. Els llibres
m'obrien una inútil saviesa
sense amor, i jo somreia,

Salvador Espriu, El caminant i el mur

I CAN ALWAYS STORE THINGS IN YOUR WARDROBE

As I am tidy and keep some order,
in your pity I sometimes store
the so much worn-out clothes of my sufferings.

Have you seen the carriage from the dream departing,
or the evening light always on the mountain,
or an old remembrance of mint on dead lips?

O, my trees, my eyes
still in prayer on the golden
summits, with no wind! Everything was
a path of wide tomorrow to me, and I only saw
the faces of the already damned, but I felt
like the confident lord of time. Books
opened for me a worthless wisdom,
which was loveless, and I smiled,
cruel prince, to the feast of night.

Listen, count now the steps
of a blindman, the faint beat
of the heart I've earned in darkness.

Plourà

VIII

Plourà. L'àvia Muntala
desa el sol a l'armari
del mal temps, entre puntes
de mantellina fetes
per ditets de Sinera.
Algun ocell voldria
penetrar les difícils
presons de llum. Contemplo
serens xiprers a l'ample
jardí del meu silenci.
Passen dofins pels límits
d'aquesta mar antiga.

Salvador Espriu, Cementiri de Sinera

VIII

It will rain. Grandma Muntala
puts the sun away in the wardrobe
of bad weather, among needle laces
made by little
fingers from Sinera.
Some bird would like to
penetrate the difficult
prisons of light. I behold
serene cypress trees in the wide
garden of my silence.
Dolphins pass by the limits
of this ancient sea.

Ofrenat a Cèrber

Salvador Espriu, Les hores

OFFERING TO CERBERUS

I've given my lifetime to words
and I've become slow pasture of this canine hunger.
O, guardian, have mercy on my bones,
for I finally come to you with no trace of flesh!
I plunged my hands in the mysterious gold
of my old Catalan, and I show them to you,
today, with no achievement, white from the ashes
of my fire made out of rags, and the sound of fragile glass
flies away from me, in the emptiness of my head.
Now I dance in pain, for throats to laugh,
to get the cheering of a thousand barks,
and I am crowned with a cap of bells.

Amb sofriment he vist.
Ara, sense cap por, tot sol, m'allunyaré,

Salvador Espriu, Les hores

I'D LIKE TO SAY IT WITH MY OLD MAN'S LIPS

In suffering, I have seen. I no longer remember the sea.
I walk along the last furrow; later I'll reach the desert.
Under the clearest skies, I hear how the wind
tells me the name I have achieved, my own name: "No one."
There will be a season to rest, and I lean forward, for the last time,
to look at the light of a long sunset.
Now, with no trace of fear, all alone, I'll go away,
into the night, into God, through sand and thirst.

Inici de càntic en el temple

Ara digueu: "La ginesta floreix,
Cisternes seques esdevenen cims
pujats per esglaons de lentes hores.
Ara digueu: "Nosaltres escoltem
Ara digueu: "Ens mantindrem fidels

Salvador Espriu, 1965

ONSET OF A SONG IN THE TEMPLE

Now, do say: "The broom blossoms;
all over, the fields are red with poppies.
With a new sickle, we begin to reap
the hard grain and, with it, the bad weeds."
O, young lips opened after
the darkness, if you knew how long it has taken
for dawn to come, how long it feels to wait for
an uprising of light among the shadows!
But we have lived enough to save the words for you,
to give you back the name of each thing,
so as you can follow the straight path
that leads to a full possession of the land.
We looked at the desert, far off;
we descended to the bottom of our dream.
Dry cisterns turn into summits
which have been climbed through steps of slow hours.
Now, do say: "We listen
to the voices of the wind over the high sea of spikes."
Now, do say: "We will remain faithful,
for ever after, at the service of this country."

Salvador Espriu, Les hores

FOR YOU TO SING WITH COMPASSIONATE LOVE

Not the song of hatred, though,
born from unfair and long humiliation.
Now, merciful fingers take me down
from the lordly gallows of the word,
and the clear rain slowly falls down
over here, our land of poor fields.
I sweetly forget the waves and the hours,
and my fear of death turns into the calm
look of a very tired walker, at the door
of the silent and warm inn of the night.
The murmur of wide waters was very far away;
they call me to rest on the deep desert;
my malignant number is saved in unity.

Donem la benvinguda a l'any Espriu.
Ens mantindrem fidels.

Arianne led your way, long time ago, for half an hour, through a singular, but easy, maze. She walked ahead of you, and you strolled around, among bizarre voices and shapes. You were free to sit down, if you felt dizzy, in a quiet corner, chosen on your own. You didn't need to stumble on the Minotaur. The maze was trivial, not dangerous, meant for tourists. When you grew tired, Arianne appeared, and obligingly showed you the starting point, so peacefully. If she guessed, though, that you felt bold, she benevolently conceded you (without her, you would have been lost) the illusion of discovering the way out. Arianne was discreet; she hardly spoke; she insinuated her guidance with a soft gesture. Arianne was moderate; and I gave you some advice on how to reward her: you had to take her, after work, to dance and buy her a cup of tea. If she liked you (Arianne was romantic, educated in Germany), and you reciprocated the affectionate girl's feelings, you were allowed to remember that Naxos was not very far away. Waking up, the sleeping beauty grieved over the silence, but shortly afterwards she was reassured: on the shore, Dionysus picked up Arianne's destiny. Later on, hard times came, though, and that destiny was wrecked, as well as mine, and maybe that of us all.
